A minimum of thirteen passengers killed and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” stated the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose term ended the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised ongoing questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
