The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
