Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.
Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.
Competitors are granted the right to contest certain rulings from the official, mirroring the system already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review other situations, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible interference end of a point.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.
Practical Application
A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another change at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.
Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
